The Birth Center of Baton Rouge developed from a desire to help the women in Baton Rouge to achieve their best birth in a safe and home-like setting. Delivering at our birth center means that we encourage you as your labor and birth unfold and progress on its own, without medical interventions. With the midwifery model we are able to provide personalized care including: 24 hour access to a midwife, a health assessment at each visit, childbirth classes, labor support with a midwife and nurse in attendance, postpartum home visits, and other unique services for our families.

Our client-centered care allows our families to spend as much time as needed to have questions answered in order for you to enter your childbirth experience with confidence. Midwives have specialized training in providing compassionate care based on your wishes for your birth. Our policies and procedures assure that stringent guidelines for safety are met and evidence based care is practiced.

What is a freestanding birth center?: A freestanding birth center is a home-like healthcare facility that provides the midwifery model of care for low-risk clients during the pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum period.

While most freestanding birth centers are not connected to or affiliated with hospitals, we have a working relationship with Dr. Ryan Dickerson and Associates in Woman’s Health and we are located on Woman’s Hospital campus.

Is it safe to give birth in a birth center?: Birth centers across the nation and the world have proven to be exceptionally safe places to give birth. Here at Birth Center of Baton Rouge, we have taken every possible step to assure the safe delivery of your baby. We continue to stay up-to-date national standards, through our accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Birth Centers.

During every appointment we assess your health. A healthy pregnancy means a healthy delivery, but we respect the gravity of birth and understand that even in low risk moms there is a small chance of an emergency. We will take note of any risk factors that you may have and we consult with Medical Director, Dr. Ryan Dickerson. Our transfer agreements with two local hospitals assured that the process occurs in a streamlined and seamless way.
I'm in my 3rd trimester, can I still switch to the birth center?: Yes! It’s not too late to transfer into our care. We will schedule you with a midwife to review your risk status, prior experiences and history, talk about your wishes for the birth and discuss your prior preparation. The midwives will discuss with you if you are a good candidate for an out of hospital birth.

Birth Rooms

All of our rooms are furnished with regular beds, tubs for water labor and birth, and large showers. There is plenty of room for family members, but also a waiting area outside when families want privacy.
