Prenatal Care

During your pregnancy your overall health will be assessed at each of our 30-60 minute visits. We will discuss health, nutrition, comfort during your pregnancy and get to know your family and what you want for your delivery.

By establishing a trusting relationship with the midwives you will have the comfort of knowing that we will follow your wishes for delivery. By the time you deliver, you can relax and focus on connecting with your baby throughout labor and savor the experience of meeting your child for the very first time.

Meet Our Midwives

Ultrasound

We offer diagnostic ultrasound imaging in house on select days, so you can conveniently have your scans done in the same facility. We also offer 3D4D and gender ultrasounds. These are elective, non-diagnostic scans offered to anyone including non-clients. $150 3D/4D $50 Gender

Labwork

We have a fully functioning lab in house where we draw routine labwork for our clients.

Labor & Birth

When you are near your delivery date your midwives will be ready 24/7 and available to meet at the birth center where you will settle into your peaceful and comfortable birth room.
In labor, it’s important for women to feel supported in every way. You will be able to eat and drink throughout labor, use our birthing tubs or showers, walk freely throughout the birth center, and change positions as needed. Our midwives and nurses are here to support all of your health needs and give you suggestions for coping or bringing your baby down into an optimal position.

We love to help your family play a part of the process within their comfort levels. If you wish, a family member can even be the first set of hands to welcome your baby earthside.

Water Birth

Birthing in water is a safe and effective means of having your baby. The water is kept at the optimal temperature for birth.

Additional benefits of water birth:
•Eases intensity of labor by soothing, relaxing and releasing endorphins
•Shortens labor time
•Increases your energy
•Allows freedom of movement
•Creates a greater sense of privacy
•Decrease perineal tearing and need for stitches
•Eases the stress of birth for baby by creating a peaceful transition from out of the womb

Newborn Care

Newborn care at the birth center focuses on peaceful transition and making sure your baby is functioning well outside the womb. Minimal intervention assures a safe, soothing and supported transition. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth supports this process, as well as, the immediate initiation of breastfeeding. We will continue to check your vital signs an also educate you on the extra-uterine life. Your family will have the opportunity to participate in measuring and weighing your baby, all while never leaving your bed.

Postpartum

After your baby’s birth, you will stay at the birth center and be cared for by your midwife and one of our nurses. We will monitor you and your baby and help you establish breastfeeding. Primarily, our goal is to give you the space to spend those special few hours admiring your baby and family.

Our families have a shorter stay compared to birthing in the hospital. We see you at the birth center for a 1 week and 6 weeks postpartum visit to make sure you are recovering nicely. During this time you still have access to your midwife with any questions that you may have.

Home Visits

Depending on your location, we do a home visit to check on you and your baby 24-48 hours after you leave the birth center to make sure you are recovering nicely. During this time you still have access to your midwife with any questions that you may have.

Breastfeeding

Our staff is able to encourage breastfeeding just after delivery. Select midwives offer lactation consultations. If you do require additional support in the following weeks we can refer you to a lactation specialist.

Milk Donation

Our birth center is proud to be the site of a Breast Milk Bank, where moms can donate breast milk for use by infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units and other special circumstances. Interested in donating breastmilk? Below are the steps in becoming a donor. 1. Call 504-703-6455 for a brief 15-minute interview. 2. Complete and return an information packet. 3. Participate in a blood screening (the cost is covered by the MMBL). 4. Once screening is complete, donors will receive an ID number and will be able to conveniently drop off milk donations at Birth Center of Baton Rouge. For questions related to the Baton Rouge Milk Depot, call 225-755-4448.
