Prenatal Care

Prenatal Care

Prenatal visits with our midwives provide individualized and compassionate care throughout your pregnancy. Your overall health will be assessed throughout and everything from nutrition to comfort during pregnancy will be part of your care. Our prenatal visits last 30-60 minutes which gives you the opportunity to make sure all of your questions are answered and, more importantly, gives you the time and space to establish a trusting relationship with all of our midwives. This relationship is the cornerstone of our care and allows you to have the comfort of knowing that your provider knows you and knows what you want. When you don't have to worry about who is in the room and whether or not they will follow your wishes, you can really relax, focus on connecting with your baby throughout labor, and savor the experience of meeting your child for the very first time.

Labor Support

Labor Support

In labor, it’s important for women to feel supported in every way! Our moms eat and drink throughout, use our birthing tubs for comfort, walk freely throughout the birth center, and change positions whenever they want. Our midwives are there to support you and give you suggestions for coping and bringing your baby down into an optimal position to birth. We love to help dads be apart of the process and, if they wish, be the first set of hands to welcome your baby earthside. If you wish to have doula support at your birth we wholeheartedly encourage it! There are many wonderful doulas in our community to choose from.

Water Birth

Water Birth

The birth center of Baton Rouge believes water birth to be a safe and effective means of having your baby. We have observed that babies born into the water have a quiet and alert state when they are born. Moms also report that laboring and birthing in the water can have tremendous benefits in easing the intensity of labor. There are a few contraindications to water birth that you can discuss with your midwife.

Each room has a birthing tub that specifically designed for water birth. The water is kept at a specific temperature for birth. Anything that is floating in the water is discreetly scooped away and upon birth, babies are lifted up out of the water and straight into mom’s arms.

Childbirth

Childbirth

When you are near your delivery date, you will likely be in touch with your midwives on a frequent basis. When the day arrives, you will find all the care and comfort you need and want. You will settle into your quiet and comfortable birth room and be attended by your midwife. When birth is imminent, a nurse will also be present to help with your baby.

Postpartum Care

Postpartum Care

After your baby’s birth, you will stay at the birth center and be cared for by your midwife and one of our nurses. We will monitor your condition and help you establish breastfeeding but primarily we will give you the space to spend those precious first moments with your baby and family. Our clients stay 8-12 hours postpartum depending on the circumstances. After the birth, we do a home visit to check on you and baby 24-48 hours after you leave the birth center and then we see you at 1 and 6 weeks postpartum to make sure you are recovering nicely.

Newborn Care

Newborn Care

Newborn care at the birth center focuses on peaceful transition and making sure your baby is functioning outside the womb. Minimal intervention assures a safe, soothing and supported transition. Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth supports this process, as well as, the immediate initiation of breastfeeding.

Transfer of Care

Transfer of Care

Most of our moms do not require hospital care, but sometimes transfer to a hospital is necessary and appropriate. You will be relieved to know that the Birth Center of Baton Rouge has agreements in place with area hospitals to assure a seamless transfer of care.

Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding Support

The Birth Center staff is knowledgeable about breastfeeding and supports it unconditionally! We can refer you to a lactation specialist for extra support, and rent breast pumps for when mom must be away. And the Birth Center of Baton Rouge is the site of a Breast Milk Bank, where moms can donate breast milk for use by infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Units and other special circumstances.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarean

VBAC

The birth center supports VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) and can care for you if it is your second VBAC. The risks associated with the initial VBAC lead us to recommend moms to be in a hospital setting, however, the risks associated with a second VBAC drop significantly and allow for an out-of-hospital birth.

Ultrasound

Ultrasound

The birth center has an ultrasound machine in-house so you can conveniently get your sonograms and midwife appointments back to back and with little to no wait time.

The birth center hosts Amber Anderson, PT, DPT, WCS, CLT who is a pelvic floor physical therapist who specializes in women's issues. She treats anyone who is looking to gain control of their pelvic health and maintain long term pelvic wellness. Pelvic floor therapy has become an integral part of our practice both for birth prep and postpartum recovery. Our clients, especially first time moms, have found great success in achieving natural birth through connecting with their pelvic floor and learning how to effectively push by working with the natural mechanisms of the body.
